From Gortroe to Castletown – November 19th

Our Club is proud to organise a walk retracing the journey from Gortroe to Castletown to bury Jim O’Sullivan, Michael McCarthy & Pat Deasy who lost their lives taking part in the Ambush.

This video describes the aftermath of the Ambush and the journey to Castletown to bury the dead.

Our walk on November 19th will begin at 11.00am in Gortroe. The charge for those taking part is €10.

We are asking participants to observe a one way system when going to Gortroe. From Gloun Cross take the road towards the Ambush. Take the first left, L8530-30, to Gortroe following the route marked with arrows on the map below. We are hoping to keep the road from Gortroe to Shanlaragh for walkers only to ensure safety.

The route will take us past Ahakeera Hall. The hall committee have kindly agreed to open the hall for toilet facilities and to allow us to break the walk with a cup of tea if desired.

The full walk from Gortroe to Castletown is 13.8km. From Gortroe to Ahakeera is a distance of 6km.

If anyone would like to walk a shorter distance they are welcome to join at any point along the way. Ahakeera Hall may be a good opportunity being 7.8km from Castletown.

This walk is on public roads so we would ask that participants remain vigilant at all times and obey stewards along the route.

It may be advisable to pack light refreshments as the walk will take 2 to 3 hours. Tea and light refreshments will be provided in Ahakeera Hall.
